If you are from the U.S., chances are you are recovering from Turkey Overload from yesterday's traditional gorge. But, did you know that turkey is a great stress reducer? It's a great protein to eat during the entire holiday season.
Turkey is chock full of B vitamins which are natural energizers. B vitamins, especially niacin, B6 and B12 found in turkey help repair our DNA and keep our cells working at full capacity. When you are energized, you are better able to cope with the stresses, both emotional and physical, that we will experience during the next 6 weeks or so.
Turkey also contains tryptophan, an essential amino acid. Tryptophan is a precursor to serotonin – a “feel-good” and anti-depressant neurochemical. When our serotonin is optimized we are happy and relaxed. Tryptophan is also a precursor to melatonin which promotes good sleep. This is why we often feel sleepy after a big turkey meal.
Turkey is also a great source of low-fat protein especially compared with the other holiday offerings such as ham and prime rib. If you are watching your overall fat and calorie intake, choose 2- 3 oz of skinless turkey breast for a quality protein to keep you calm, relaxed, and happy during the holiday season without packing on the pounds! What's better than that?
