Part 2 in a series about Apple Cider Vinegar…..

bloodpressureAs mentioned in my first post about the benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar in diabetic blood sugar control, there are many other applications for this great product. One of these is for reduction and control of High Blood Pressure (hypertension). Considering how easy it is to take (mix a few teaspoons in water, hold your nose, and glup it down!), it is an inexpensive and painless way to add some of the good Mother of Vinegar to your diet repetoire.

HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE

Apple Cider Vinegar has been found helpful in the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure). Its exact mechanism is unclear, but it has been suggested that it may work by increasing nitric oxide which relaxes blood vessels; or it may inhibit an enzyme called angiotensin converting enzyme from making angiotensin II – a chemical which constricts blood vessels and increases blood pressure. Angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) prescription medications include drugs such as candesartan (Atacand), valsartan (Diovan), and losartan (Cozaar). If you are currently taking one of these prescribed medications, or another hypertension medication, please check with your doctor before starting ACV therapy.

If you have borderline hypertension (130/90 or less), you may want to start with an initial dosage of 2 tablespoons of AVC mixed in some water or juice, 2-3 times per day for a few weeks. Keep an eye on your blood pressure readings. When they come into the normal range, you may consider dropping your dosage to 2 tablespoons once per day, or a few teaspoons a few times per day.

It is important that you dilute the vinegar as it is quite strong, and if taken straight can damage tooth enamel and also burn the esophagus. I dilute my daily dose of ACV with about a cup of cold water. It can also be added to hot water and drunk tea-style. I don’t find the taste unpleasant, but it is an acid afterall, and I’d prefer for it to get into my stomach pretty quickly where it can have a party with the other acids there. :)
